Wrightwood, CA– November 1, 2007: Mountain High Resort is proud to announce its partnership with Chill, a non-profit, learn-to-ride program for at-risk kids. Founded by Jake and Donna Burton of Burton Snowboards, Chill was created to bring board sports to youngsters who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity. This year Mountain High will be taking youth off the street and putting them on the mountain with everything they need including lift tickets, lessons, and rentals. Taking at-risk kids and providing them with a means to accomplish goals is no different than helping beginning skiers or snowboarders learn how to ride. The Winter Sports School at Mountain High is up for the challenge and hopes to make a difference in the lives of these struggling youngsters.
Says Cindy Shippy, Winter Sports School Director, “We’re honored to be part of the Chill Program. Hopefully we can help these kids find a positive outlet and maybe forget about the bad things in their life.”
Thanks to the Chill Program, resorts across the country are opening their arms to troubled youth and providing them with everything they need to ride: lessons, transportation, gear, and tickets, whatever. Kids want to learn how to snowboard because it's cool and fun, but it takes several lessons and tons of hard work to learn. During their coaching youngsters will accomplish goals they never thought they could while learning some of the most important lessons of life- patience, persistence, responsibility, courage, integrity, and pride-all through positive adult role models who offer them respect and encouragement.
Chill offers lessons in snowboarding, surfing, and skating and works with agencies that serve youth challenged by a multitude of issues. Some live in group homes and foster care. Some are drug or alcohol addicted. Some come from the juvenile justice system, and some deal with daily violence, excessive anger, depression, and feelings of worthlessness. Many of the kids Chill works with have never left their cities, or even their neighborhoods, and most have never experienced riding a mountain or a wave. More than that, Chill gives these youth an opportunity to belong to a community of riders and helps them see beyond their existing circumstances to envision what the possibilities for their lives might be.
Mountain High is proud to be part of this noteworthy program and looks forward to brightening the days of many deserving youngsters. For more information about the Chill Program contact: Michele Boguslofski, Director of Chill, at (802) 652-3570 or micheleb@burton.com .
