The season’s first snowmaking tests took place early Friday morning 10/18 at Mountain High, Southern California’s closest winter resort. Temperatures dropped to a chilly 27 degrees and the Wrightwood resort made snow for several hours at its West Resort. This is an important exercise as the resort plans to open. It gives resort operators a chance to identify problems prior to Opening Day and new employees an opportunity to experience real snowmaking first hand.
Mountain High invested more than $500K in snowmaking over the past two years, primarily at its East Resort. New, low-energy air/water guns improve the mountain’s ability to make snow and open early.
Says Matt Bailey, “When winter comes, we'll be ready. It's going to be a great season. ”
Over the past few years, the installation of new low/mid energy snowguns have radically reduced Mountain High’s annual diesel consumption. Today the resort uses just 1% of what it did 10 years ago. With these improvements and the extensive water supply, Mountain High expects to have both its East & West resorts open before Christmas.

Stay tuned for the resort’s official Opening Day announcement. Mountain High is traditionally the first resort to open in Southern California and expects to open early again this season.
