Mountain High enjoyed a successful Christmas season and, thanks to the current El Niño weather pattern, its East Resort is expected to open Friday, January 8.
Holiday visits from December 19, 2015, through January 3, 2016, were up 15 percent compared to last season and the North Pole Tubing Park was sold out 90 percent of the time. Mountain High officials say consistent snowmaking efforts, a healthy Southern California economy and the lure of El Niño this winter were contributing factors for the boost in attendance.
Winter storms are headed toward Mountain High and Wrightwood this week with more than a foot of snow expected. If the system holds true, it will be the biggest storm cycle in five years.
By the end of the current week, Mountain High anticipates that it will have all three of its resorts open for skiers and snowboarders. This will be the first time that the East Resort has opened in almost three years.
“The beast is back and we hope to see you all up here this weekend,” said Mountain High Chief Marketing Officer John McColly. “The last time the East Resort opened was February 24, 2013.”
The East Resort boasts the longest trails in the region serviced by a single high-speed quad. Its long, groomed, cruising trails make it perfect for carving, but it is also home to the Olympic Bowl, the region’s longest, steepest bump run with a top elevation of 8,200 feet.
After a quick ascent on the Mountain High Express, skiers and snowboarders will find an additional 20 acres of beginner terrain serviced by The Discovery quad chairlift. With 1,600 vertical feet of uninterrupted corduroy, the East Resort offers traditional skiers and snowboarders a true alpine experience without having to journey far from home.
A singled lift ticket is good at all three areas and there are free shuttles waiting to take you between Mountain High’s East Resort and West Resort.
